MNBS was established in 2004 by its Loughborough-based director, Mark Needham, after he had spent 25 years as a manager and senior manager involved, either directly or indirectly, with safety, health and hygiene within the retail and television broadcasting industries.

The business was set up because Mark recognised the fact that, as far as workplace safety and health is concerned, many managers and business owners are frustrated by ever-changing legislation, and not knowing who to turn to for help. Indeed, many of his friends at the time ran their own companies, and were greatly concerned about whether or not they were operating within the law. They needed professional guidance in a language they understood.

Specialising
Initially, Mark Needham Business Services consisted of two divisions - health & safety, and employment law - but within its first year of operating the company began concentrating in the former discipline when demand for this service grew.

An integral part of implementing any safe system of work successfully within the workplace is the provision of training supported by effective communication and information. In 2005, therefore, Mark embarked on a comprehensive teaching course where he successfully completed a programme qualifying him to teach in the workplace and at Further Education level.

To continue his professional development, as well as keep himself informed of forthcoming legislation, Mark subsequently became a member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) in June 2006.

In January 2007, the decision was inevitably taken to drop employment law from the MNBS list of services in order to specialise, instead, on workplace safety, health and environmental issues. Around the same time, the company name was fixed to its abbreviated format, and a new company logo - a simple, basic design in assimilation to MNBS's use of straightforward, understandable dialogue - adopted to reflect change.

Respect for our clients
Trust and a deep respect for confidentiality is the basis of excellent relations with MNBS clients, who include small to medium size local businesses, as well as UK-wide company groups, some household names amongst them.

Indeed, Mark still carries out work for most of his very first clients, including working on behalf of a local taxi firm (staff of just three!), which has helped towards the owner successfully tendering for a council contract - in stark contrast to him organising health and safety at a 120,000sq.ft. warehouse used by a national blue chip company.

Miscellaneous
Mark is a former University of Sheffield student (BA 2:1 Hons. Journalism Studies), and is CIEH qualified in health and safety risk assessment.
